Clare Strand

For Source magazine retrospective portfolio the photographer Clare Strand talks to Lucy Soutter about her work. Soutter’s fascination with conceptual art and Strand’s pleasure in systems and games describes an area of common interest.

The Discrete Channel with Noise has been shortlisted for The Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize . My fellow 2020 nominees are: Mohamed Bourouissa, Anton Kusters and Mark Neville .The winner will be announced via a online ceremony on 14th Sep 2020. Just before Lockdown I was asked by Wallpaper to produce a front cover and fashion spread for their Wallpaper Magazine Style Edition. I proposed to revisit a work I made in 2011 entitled Flatland/ Spaceland. This work referenced Edwin Abbott Abbott's visionary book Flatland which discusses dimensional travel, through the narration of a square, transforming into a cube. For me, when reading Abbott's Flatland it seemed so appropriate to the shifts and anxieties around the photographic medium.
